What is a tension?
A tension is a guideline that consists of as many stitches and rows to make a 4 inch (10 cm square)

Do I have to do a tension swatch?
Yes, only the correct gauge will guarantee the size given in your pattern. Start with the recommended needle size. If the square is to big, go down a needle size, if it is to small go up a needle size.

How do I knit a proper tension swatch?
The tension is always knit in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row). Cast on 2 stitches more then given in your tension in your pattern or yarn label and knit 2 more rows then given. Measure inside the edge stitches and between your cast on and your working needle.

My tension is correct in width but not in length what do I do?
The length is only important it your pattern works in rows, any pattern with a yoke or raglan sleeves.

I have done the tension and I am right on but after knitting a few inches in the round the tension is off. What can I do to correct that?
When you knit the sweater in the round you should also do the tension in the round. Take a short circular needle cast on
12-20 stitches more then given in the tension and start knitting. Don’t worry about the long strands you make by knitting in the round. Now measure inside the 6-10 stitches on each side.

My garment has a pattern. Do I knit the tension swatch in the pattern?
The tension is always knit in stocking stitch, knit one row, purl one row unless other wise specified.

My knitting is to lose what do I do?
Use smaller needles then recommended and knit a tension swatch

My knitting s to tight what do I do?
Use bigger needles then recommended and do a tension swatch.
