I hate row counters, how can I avoid them?
On flat pieces that are sewn together I like to use an edge stitch. Always knit the last stitch and slip the first stitch k-wise. Every bump on the side equals two rows. Just count the bumps and multiply them by 2. If you can't see the bumps count the rows on the wrong side.
What can I use instead of the plastic markers?
Use different coloured yarns and tie a loop. Colour co-ordinate them for different cables and panels.
Is there a trick to doing bobbles?
There are many different ways of knitting bobbles. One trick is to knit backwards and the other trick is once you finished your bobble pick up the horizontal bar between your bobble and next stitch and pass your last stitch from the bobble over the horizontal bar.
How do I knit backwards?
Insert your left needle into your first stitch from left to right leaving the tip behind your right needle, lay the yarn over the left needle counter clock-wise (back to front) with the right needle pass the stitch over.
Are there tricks to knitting cables?
Cables crossing to the right leave cable needle at back of work.
Cables crossing to the left leave cable needle at front of work.
I am getting tangled up with my colours in my Entre Lac sweater. How can I prevent it?
I find it much easier to knit backwards then turning the work around.
When I cast off my last stitch is always huge. What can I do to prevent it?
Before you cast off the last stitch pick up another stitch from the row below. You will have 3 stitches left on your needle. Pass the two stitches over your last stitch.
My pattern tells me to cast off the center stitches for the neck. Do I have to do this?
Just put the center stitches on a holding needle if the neckband is knitted on. For any other neck finish cast off the center stitches.
How do I know I have enough yarn to finish a row?
For a basic pattern 3 times the width of your sweater is usually enough. For casting off or a cable sweater you will need more.
When I graft my mittens or socks together I get ears. What can I do to prevent this?
Once you have your stitches arranged on the two needles for grafting, slip the last stitch on either end over the second last stitch.
